Our aim is to provide information to anyone who wishes to reduce their carbon footprint on the earth. What that means to you is a very personal thing, and that’s okay. A few small changes by each of us may collectively be that sea change needed to make a sustainable lifestyle the norm rather than the odd curiosity it now is. Whether that’s simply replacing incandescent light bulbs for more energy efficient ones or “going all the way” and living on renewable energy, we applaud you for taking a step in the right direction.
Sunshine hitting the earth provides more energy in one single hour than our whole planet will use in an entire year. And yet, solar power only comprises .5% of the total energy production in the world. Considering that solar power may be harnessed anywhere the sun shines, it is only somewhat comforting that there have been rapid increases in the use of this renewable resource. Solar energy is only one choice of several in renewable energy alternatives. Collectively, they pale in comparison to the resources now devoted to keeping us reliant on fossil fuels. There are choices, there are other way to power our homes, our cars, our toys. And the compromises we have to make to use these renewable are often less than people imagine. It is possible to live sustainably, and indeed live well, sustainably!
OffGridInfo.ca is a work in progress, so please be patient. And if you have some constructive suggestions for us, we’d love to hear them. We are always interested in hearing about people’s plans and adventures in reducing their dependency on fossil fuels and the public grid. Many of our blog posts and articles were born from the ideas that were shared with us. And many spring from our own experience in getting off the grid and living in a normal home on renewable energy.
